Mr. Clean: There’s one television host who’s [expletive] mad at the depravity on daytime talk shows--and he’s not going to take it anymore. That was the message Monday from Geraldo Rivera, whose own shows have been known to degenerate into bone-breaking brawls. No more, said Rivera. When his revamped “Geraldo Rivera Show” debuts for its 10th year Sept. 9 (KCBS-TV Channel 2, 3 p.m. weekdays), it will adhere to a 10-point “Talk Show Bill of Rights and Responsibilities,” which Rivera has crafted and wants other talk show hosts to sign. Among the points (no, he doesn’t call them amendments): “misrepresentation and exploitation will have no place,” “civility must prevail,” “any acts of studio violence will be edited out of the final product” and “children may be watching.” The show also announced the hiring of three new producers: Adrienne M. Wheeler from “Donahue”; Carole Autori, a veteran of “Barbara Walters Specials,” from CNBC; and Emily Barsh, a former hand at CNBC’s “Rivera Live.”

Sahl and the Senator: Twenty-eight years ago, when he was a U.S. senator leading the crusade against the Vietnam War, Eugene J. McCarthy was in the political spotlight. Now, McCarthy will be in the spotlight again, joining social critic and humorist Mort Sahl in “Mort Sahl’s America” for performances Sept. 5, 6 and 7 at the Tiffany Theater. Since Sahl’s show features comments on unfolding world events, it is different every performance. McCarthy is expected to add his own off-the-cuff views.

Another Symphony Falters: The ill-fated San Diego Symphony isn’t the only California orchestra forced to disband because of financial difficulties. The Sacramento Symphony, which was to have opened its 1996-97 season on Sept. 13, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which will lead to dissolution of the orchestra. The symphony’s board of directors said the petition follows the refusal of the musicians’ union to accept a new contract that included cuts in both pay and benefits--a contract that the Sacramento Symphony Players Assn. called “regressive and punitive.” Board members said the symphony’s debt exceeds $1 million.

Lonely Oasis: Oasis opens an East Coast swing of concert dates tonight in Chicago, but lead singer Liam Gallagher won’t be with the band because he is suffering from acute laryngitis. On Friday night, the group taped a segment for “MTV Unplugged” in London, but there’s a chance it won’t air because Gallagher, who had been diagnosed 24 hours earlier, was unable to perform. Guitarist-songwriter Noel Gallagher, Liam’s older brother and the group’s creative force, took over the vocal chores during the 12-song set--a move that could leave some viewers disappointed, but others delighted by the chance to hear Noel sing some songs that he wrote but hasn’t sung in concert or on record. An MTV spokesman said Monday a decision as to when or if the show will be aired will be made after viewing the footage.

Macabre Memory: A girlfriend of the late American rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix sold their “dope box” and other memorabilia at a London auction for $55,000 last week. Kathy Etchingham, who was the rock icon’s girlfriend for three years in the late 1960s, offered the items at Bonham’s auction house. An Australian private buyer bidding by telephone paid $7,800 for the black lacquer box, inlaid with mother of pearl. Etchingham, who inspired Hendrix’s song “Foxy Lady,” said, “We called it the dope box. It would be used several times a night.” Hendrix died in London on Sept. 18, 1970, choking to death after drinking wine and taking an overdose of barbiturates. He was 27.
