Four-Star Films : ‘The Bank Dick’
W.C. Fields (pictured) hit one of his comic peaks in this cynical 1940 tale of henpecked bank guard Egbert Souse and his desperate attempts to avoid catastrophe at the hands of his idiot future son-in-law Og (Grady Sutton) and a persnickety bank examiner named Snoopington (Franklin Pangborn), while saving time for a few stiff ones at the Black Pussycat Cafe. They don’t make them funnier than this. Eddie Cline directed; Fields, wrote under the pseudonym “Mahatma Kane Jeeves”(an inside joke on his young buddy Orson Welles) (AMC early Wednesday at 5:15 a.m.).
