Cornerback Scott Nemeth’s 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown was the difference as Aliso Niguel rallied to beat Hilliard (Ohio), 8-7, Friday night in front of an announced crowd of 6,000 in Hilliard.

Nemeth recovered the fumble in the third quarter after All-Pacific Coast League tackle Dave Seale knocked the ball loose from running back Durance Mitchell. Seale put Aliso Niguel on the board first by tackling Mitchell in the end zone for a safety.

Mitchell, an all-state running back, was able to get the ball inside the Wolverines’ 40-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but Aliso Niguel tackle Ryan Valadez sacked the Wildcat quarterback on fourth down. The Wolverines then ran out the clock.

Trent Perley accounted for a large chunk of Aliso Niguel’s offense, rushing for 125 yards in 15 carries. The Wolverines had 260 yards in total offense.

Perley left the game in the third quarter after suffering a neck injury. He was taken to a hospital, but his injuries weren’t believed to be serious.

Mitchell, who averaged 175-yards rushing a game last season, was held to 92 yards in 22 carries. He scored Hilliard’s touchdown on a 35-yard run in the first quarter.
