Judge Apparently Was Ill-Prepared

Share

The judge who was supposedly prepared to hear oral argument for a petition to halt the dumping at Toland Landfill specifically asked, “Where is the Little Red School House?”

It would seem that anyone who had studied and prepared to rule on such an important petition would know the proximity of the school as well as all other elements of the case and would know that the Little Red School House is in exactly the same place it has been for 100 years--only 300 feet from Toland Road and now greatly endangered by greatly increased truck traffic and pollution.

One hundred years may be a long time for a school to continue. Perhaps there are more sophisticated concepts in education today, but with Gov. Pete Wilson’s new call for smaller classes and the options for choice in education, it would seem that the Little Red School House is still state of the art and should be protected from the onslaught of traffic to Toland Landfill.

I urge the judiciary and the Board of Supervisors to give serious thought to the problems of earthquakes, pollution, water quality, and the safe education of children.
