OUTLOOK

The Oilers had a tough time on and off the field last season. It began with a loss to Bellflower St. John Bosco, 20-12, in the season-opener. They also had a horrific league season, where they were able to score in double figures only once in five games. (To their credit the Oilers were shut out only once, by Esperanza.) This all culminated with Coach George Pascoe’s resignation. Defensive coordinator Mike Dodd will take over, and decide after the season if he wants to remain as football coach or go back to baseball. Dodd has good team speed, an all-league back in Locklin (1,100 yards) and an seldom-used receiver in Masuda (19 catches and 285 yards). But the coach also has lightweight linemen, an untested quarterback in VanHoorebeke, and he must plug a defense that gave up an average of 35.8 points in league play last season. He also must make the Oilers believe they are more than a league rest stop. That’s a tall order for anyone to accomplish in 10 (or more) games.
