Is there a TV doctor in the house?

Hank Rosenfeld, who works for the Santa Monica Visitors and Convention Bureau, was approached by a visiting student from Switzerland.

“She said, ‘Excuse me, where is, can you tell me, Agoura Hills?’ ” Rosenfeld related.

He asked why she wanted to know.

“Because I want to meet Dr. Quinn,” she responded.

It turns out she had heard that TV’s “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman”--a popular show in Switzerland--was filmed in Agoura Hills.

Rosenfeld, ever faithful to Santa Monica, told her Agoura Hills was a long way away but he added that she was in luck because another popular show was filmed nearby.

“I sent her up the beach to

‘Baywatch’-land,” Rosenfeld said.

BUILD YOUR VOCABULARY: Proving you’re never too old to learn, Julie Mazur, Michael Rosen and Bob Perez each found a new word--”remodelation”--on a marquee in West L.A. (see photo).

*

A HAIRY BACK CAN BE ATTRACTIVE: No, that wasn’t a singles ad that Everett Greenberg culled from the Bear Valley Voice in Big Bear Lake (see excerpt). It’s a lost pet column.

A COUPLE OF ESCAPE ARTISTS: So, a big, star-studded fund-raiser was held in Beverly Hills for the Democratic Party and Bill Clinton at the old estate of Harold Lloyd, the silent film star. Lloyd was known for his daring stunts. And, by an odd coincidence, the titles of some of Lloyd’s movies almost sound like chapters in Clinton’s life:

* “Willie” (1914)

* “Willie’s Haircut” (1914)

* “An Ozark Romance” (1918)

* “It’s a Wild Life” (1918)

* “Safety Last” (1923)

* “Why Worry?” (1923)

* “Hot Water” (1924)

* “Welcome Danger” (1929)

* “Movie Crazy” (1932)

*

BOTH INDUSTRIES PRODUCE FARCES: Did you see where Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) is helping Bob Dole prepare for the Republican nominee’s coming debates with President Clinton? Well, Thompson has played this role before, in a sense. An actor, Thompson portrayed a presidential advisor in the Clint Eastwood movie “In the Line of Fire.”

KNOW YOUR SUBURBS: Duarte is inviting everyone to get their kicks on its share of Route 66 (Huntington Drive) during a parade on Saturday. The local salute to the 2,248-mile highway will include an antique car show, marching bands, floats, horses and memorabilia. Bet you didn’t know that bandleader Glenn Miller had a home in Duarte and wrote the song “Tuxedo Junction” there, did you?

Among the old Duarte buildings surviving Route 66’s heyday is the onetime headquarters of the late Duarte Dispatch. The Dispatch’s motto was: “The only newspaper that gives a darn about Duarte.”

Can anyone say the same for Agoura Hills?

miscel LA ny:

Carrie Howes of Alhambra won the $100 first prize at the L.A. County Fair’s Spam Luncheon Meat Fair Recipe Contest. Howes won for her “Spamlava,” which is patterned after a baklava dish. “Spamlava”--now there’s something that could really remodelate your stomach.
