Foothill Transit Plans Hearings on Fare Hikes
The people on the bus go up and down, but the fares have stayed the same for eight years.
Facing increasing routes and decreasing federal subsidies, Foothill Transit announced that it will be holding public hearings throughout the month to discuss changes in what it charges its San Gabriel Valley riders.
“The federal funds to the region have been cut by 40% in the last two years, and we anticipate over the next two years all federal operating money will go away,” said Foothill Executive Director Roger Chapin. “We’re not looking at a crisis right now, but at the same time, we don’t want to look at a situation down the road where we’ll have to raise fares exponentially and cut services.”
Some of Foothill Transit’s proposals include fare increases of 5 to 10 cents, the elimination of transfer fees, a $10 increase in monthly passes, and the simplification of “Express Zone” charges.
The first is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at South El Monte council chambers, 1415 N. Santa Anita Ave. Meetings are planned for Pomona, Azusa, Duarte and West Covina.
