SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Speed kills. So do turnovers.

Oxnard High was the beneficiary of both, and Camarillo the victim, in the Yellowjackets’ 21-14 victory over the Scorpions in a nonleague football opener Friday night.

Oxnard defensive lineman John Adams intercepted a pass by Camarillo quarterback Joe Borchard in the Scorpion end zone for a touchdown to break a 14-14 tie with 2 minutes 32 seconds to play.

Camarillo was pinned deep in its territory by Todd Matthews’ 43-yard punt, and Borchard was trying to give the Scorpions room to work when his pass was intercepted by Adams.

Borchard completed 14 of 30 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns, both to Mike Anger (10 catches for 166 yards), but he threw three interceptions.

A 37-yard touchdown pass from Borchard to Anger tied the score, 14-14, with 9:49 left.

Camarillo was hurt by the speed and athletic ability of Oxnard players, most notably Desmond Davis, who rushed for 180 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries.

It didn’t take long for Davis and Oxnard to get started. On the second play of the game, the junior sped 81 yards for a score. Matthews converted the extra point to give the Yellowjackets a quick 7-0 lead.

Davis ran four times for 40 yards on Oxnard’s next possession. The Yellowjackets again drove deep into Camarillo territory before Matthews missed on a 32-yard field-goal attempt.

Camarillo tied the score, 7-7, early in the second quarter, driving 80 yards in 10 plays to score on a two-yard pass from Borchard to Anger. Borchard and Anger also connected on the big play of the drive, a 32-yard completion on third-and-five.
