Asphalt Spills as Tanker Overturns

Share

A truck loaded with hot asphalt overturned on a Santa Ana Freeway onramp Monday, dumping about 350 gallons on the street and shutting down traffic for hours, authorities said.

The double tanker was traveling on the 1st Street onramp to the southbound freeway about 11:45 a.m. when it tipped over for an unknown reason, California Highway Patrol Officer Raul Malfavon said.

The asphalt that spilled from the tanks had been heated to about 375 degrees, Malfavon said.

Malfavon said the ramp was expected to remain closed until at least 6 p.m. “I don’t know if it’s because they had to let it cool down before they could pick it up,” he said.

CHP authorities said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
