Dog Park Concept Wins 4-0 Approval

A $75,000 plan to provide a park for dogs and their owners was approved in concept by the City Council this week.

The proposal to develop a 1.1-acre site at Golden Lantern and Chapparosa Park Road was approved 4 to 0, with Mayor Patricia C. Bates absent.

The council also authorized preparation of a General Plan amendment to rezone the park site for recreational use, a process that is expected to take about three months.

Residents living near the proposed park will get a chance to comment on the project at that time. Another public hearing will take place when the city awards a construction bid for the park.

If given final approval by the council, city Public Works Director Ken Montgomery said the park could be finished by August 1997.

The council expressed concerns about potential liability from dogfights or dog bites, but City Atty. Terry Dixon said that such incidents are uncommon.

The park would be gated to control dogs entering and leaving. City planners will also have trash cans, dispensers for dog waste disposal bags and signs installed.
