Westmont Shuts Out The Master’s in Soccer

Two players with local ties helped Westmont College record a 5-0 victory over The Master’s in a nonconference men’s soccer match Wednesday at Santa Barbara.

Hugo Llamas, a 1995 graduate of Santa Paula High, and Vince Alves, a 1994 Royal graduate, each scored for Westmont, ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division I.

Westmont improved to 4-1-1. Goalkeeper Kris Bage had 10 saves for Master’s (4-2-1).

Moorpark 1, San Diego City 1--Raider goalkeeper Justin Hanover had three saves in the second half before allowing the tying goal with one minute to play in the nonconference match at Moorpark.

Moments before the tying goal, Joey Medaglia--whose goal gave Moorpark (1-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute--missed on a breakaway.

East Los Angeles 3, Mission 0--Roberto Perez, formerly of Burroughs High and Cal State Northridge, had two goals and an assist as the Huskies (3-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, dominated a nonconference match at East L.A. Mission is 4-3-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 4, Claremont 2--Krissy Trower scored twice for the Mustangs (3-2) in a nonconference victory over the Stags (1-4) at The Master’s.

Tiffay Boardman and Sarah DeWolf also scored for The Master’s.

Cal Lutheran 11, Whittier 0--Reserve Chayna Manning had three goals and an assist, and Jill Simmer scored the fourth, fifth and sixth goals for the Regals (4-1, 1-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Cal Lutheran.

Ashley Scott added two goals and two assists, and Deanna Lugue had two goals and an assist for Cal Lutheran.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. Valencia 15-7, 15-6, 1-15, 15-8--Jill Bussanich and Maryann Parker each had seven kills and Errin Benesh had six blocks for the Crusaders (1-1) in a nonleague victory at Valencia.

Stephanie Dolbier had 21 assists and Kim Wolf had six aces for Village Christian. Jamie Cantwell had five aces and Kristin Webster had six kills and five blocks for the Vikings (0-2).

Holy Martyrs d. Ribet Academy, 15-7, 13-15, 15-12, 16-14--Nora Apelian had 13 kills and Lar Hovsepian had 12 aces for the Armens (3-0).

La Reina d. Simi Valley, 4-15, 15-8, 15-10, 15-1--Kylene Krol had nine kills and 20 assists, and Alyssa Hain had nine kills and 17 assists for La Reina (2-0) in a nonleague match.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Valley 15, Rio Hondo 6--Defensive standouts Paul Lovejoy, Roger Wright and Jason Payne were among six Monarchs who had two goals apiece in a Western State Conference opener at Rio Hondo. Goalkeeper Hamlet Azarian had three saves for Valley (5-5-1).

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Burroughs 15, Hoover 3--Alfonso Tucay had 11 goals and Loran Leidenger added four for Burroughs (4-2) in a nonleague game at Hoover. Burroughs goalkeeper Nick Triandos had five saves.

Loyola 10, La Canada 9--Brendan Naeve scored five goals for the Spartans (3-3) in the nonleague overtime loss at Loyola.

La Canada took a 4-3 halftime lead on junior goalkeeper Russell Bernstein’s last-second, pool-length goal, but the Cubs outscored the Spartans, 5-3, in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 9-9, and force overtime.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Moorpark 47, Victor Valley 3--Four Raider wrestlers recorded victories, including heavyweight Jason King, who recorded a fall against Ray Rivera in 2 minutes 14 seconds. Anthony Adame (126), Jaime Ceta (134) and Matt Werner (142) also recorded victories.
