Bomb Hoax Closes Freeway for 1 Hour
A purported pipe bomb that turned out to be a hoax closed California 118 west of Grimes Canyon Road near Moorpark for more than an hour Friday, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol closed both sides of the highway about 11:25 a.m. after someone reported finding a pipe bomb on the side of the road, said a CHP spokeswoman.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called in and removed the device, which turned out to be a piece of plastic pipe stuffed with paper, said a sheriff’s spokeswoman.
The CHP reopened the highway just before 1 p.m.
