Washington Beats Arizona the Huard Way

Brock Huard’s first start for the Washington Huskies was one to remember.

Huard, became the first Washington freshman to pass for 300 yards in a game, leading the No. 24 Huskies to a 31-17 victory over Arizona on Saturday in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Seattle.

“Most every time they needed a big throw, he got one,” Arizona Coach Dick Tomey said.

Replacing injured Shane Fortney, Huard, completed 20 of 31 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He became the 11th Washington quarterback to pass for 300 yards in a game.

Huard passed four yards to Gerald Harris, 24 yards to Jerome Pathon and five yards to Dave Janoski for touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Huskies built a 21-10 lead. Huard was 15 for 22 for 232 yards in the first half.

Huard is the younger brother of Damon Huard, who became Washington’s career passing leader last season while his brother was redshirting.

“It’s a lot of fun to continue the tradition Damon set and go after his records,” Huard said.

Washington, 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10, held Arizona (2-2, 0-1) to 106 rushing yards in 33 carries and the Huskies’ secondary intercepted Keith Smith three times, two by cornerback Mel Miller.

Corey Dillon, the Huskies’ backup tailback, had his first 100-yard rushing game, getting 125 yards in 20 carries.

Fortney didn’t play quarterback because of a strained right knee suffered in the fourth quarter against BYU last week. Wearing a knee brace, he held on the Huskies’ extra points and a field goal.

Wisconsin 14, Stanford 0--Cardinal quarterback Chad Hutchinson got well acquainted with Wisconsin pass rusher Tarek Saleh in a nonconference game at Madison, Wis., as the Badgers’ left defensive end made three sacks and recovered a Hutchinson fumble.

With Saleh disrupting the Cardinal offense, Stanford (1-2), which now emphasizes the run, was held to 50 yards in 31 carries.

Wisconsin improved to 3-0 even though quarterback Mike Samual had three passes intercepted in the second half. A fourth interception was nullified by a penalty. But Samuel sealed the victory with a one-yard sneak with 1:50 left.

California 33, Nevada 15--Brandon Willis replaced injured running back Tarik Smith and ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, as the Golden Bears a pulled away to a victory at Berkeley.

Smith, ranked fifth nationally in rushing with a 178.5-yard average, suffered a sprained knee late in the first quarter.

The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 under first-year Coach Steve Mariucci, only the third time in 18 years Cal has started a season with three consecutive victories.

Nevada is now 1-2.

Baylor 42, Oregon State 10--The loss for the Beavers (0-3) at Waco, Texas, was their 13th in a row, the longest losing streak in Division I-A. Kalief Muhammad raced 100 yards with a kickoff and ran 18 yards for another score for Baylor (3-0).
