Falcons Suspend George for Tirade

The Atlanta Falcons suspended Jeff George on Monday, one day after the quarterback confronted Coach June Jones on the sidelines, and there were strong indications that George’s career in Atlanta is over.

“He left me no choice,” Jones said after meeting with George, who departed the Falcons complex without comment. “I told him I’d call him tomorrow, and we’ll see where it leads from there.”

Jones, who built his entire run-and-shoot offense around the strong-armed George, said all options would be considered, including a trade.

“After the next 24 to 48 hours, we’ll look at it closely and decide where we’re going to go from there,” Jones said. “It’s just a bad situation. I don’t know how it’s going to sort out.”

George, after being benched in the third quarter of a 33-18 loss to Philadelphia that left the Falcons at 0-3, followed Jones down the sideline, noticeably upset with the decision.

The two met before Monday’s workout, and it was clear that George had gone too far with his sideline tirade. Jones said the suspension was for conduct detrimental to the team.

Bobby Hebert will start Sunday at San Francisco.

Dallas wide receiver Kevin Williams could sit out at least six weeks because of a foot injury suffered in Sunday’s 10-7 loss to Buffalo.

Williams, who has only caught 11 passes for 154 yards in four games, severely sprained his right foot and suffered a hairline break of a bone at the base of the ankle.

Kelvin Martin, the Cowboys’ third down receiver, will start in place of Williams against Philadelphia.

Three interceptions have changed St. Louis Coach Rich Brooks’ mind.

Brooks, who said last week he would “go the course” with Steve Walsh as the Rams’ starting quarterback, has decided to bench Walsh and will start rookie Tony Banks this weekend against Arizona.

Walsh passed for 177 yards and three interceptions in a 17-10 loss to Washington on Sunday.

“We’re not going to expect Tony to go out and win the game for us,” Brooks said. “In essence, we didn’t necessarily expect Steve to win the game for us.

“We expected him not to lose it.”

Steve Young wasn’t around for the finish of the San Francisco 49ers’ loss at Carolina, and he might not start next Sunday’s game against Atlanta.

Coach George Seifert said he was considering whether to rest Young, who aggravated a groin injury when he was pulled down by Kevin Greene on the 49ers’ first offensive play in a 23-7 loss to Carolina.

If Young doesn’t play, Elvis Grbac would start in his place against the Falcons.
