Mother’s Beach Gets New Slides and Swings

At Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey, the kids now have playground equipment to fit their pint-sized bodies, including smaller slides and swings low to the ground.

“We replaced old equipment that had been broken down and was pretty outdated,” said Ken Johnson, chief of community service for the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.

A play pirate ship and a sculpture of swarming sea gulls at the beach’s entrance were also added.

The new equipment is accessible to the handicapped, allowing those in wheelchairs or on crutches to easily reach the equipment, Johnson said. Instead of sand, the playground equipment sits on beige outdoor flooring.

The beach, at Admiralty Way and Via Marina, already had a wheelchair ramp with rails leading into the water, for the disabled. A wheelchair is also available at the lifeguard station for those who don’t want to get saltwater on their chair.
