Newfield Arrested on Drug Charges

Milwaukee Brewer outfielder Marc Newfield was arrested on drug charges Friday in Dearborn, Mich., authorities said.

Wayne County Sheriff Robert Ficano said Newfield, who played at Marina High in Huntington Beach, was arrested at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, just outside Detroit, about 3 p.m. Ficano said police received information that a delivery was to occur and obtained a search warrant.

Newfield was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and was released after posting $300 bond, Ficano said.

Newfield had about 30 grams of marijuana and about $1,000 cash when arrested, Ficano said.

Montreal Expo right-hander Pedro Martinez, suspended for eight games following a bench-clearing brawl with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, appealed the penalty.

With Montreal battling for the NL wild-card spot, the appeal will allow Martinez to pitch the Expos’ final regular-season game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

Martinez, who charged the mound and threw his batting helmet at Philadelphia right-hander Mike Williams following two inside pitches, was suspended Thursday by NL president Len Coleman.
