City Moves Forward on Street Widening

The city has moved forward with plans to acquire land at 933 Harbor Blvd. for a street-widening project, despite protests of a property owner who said the action could pose a safety threat.
The City Council recently approved condemnation actions, the first step in legally acquiring property, on three other parcels in the area: 519 Ball Road, 1120 S. Harbor Blvd. and 1111 S. Harbor Blvd.
Officials said that portions of the properties are needed to complete roadway improvements such as intersection upgrades and widening the street to add lanes on Harbor from Vermont Street to Ball Road.
Hament Patel, whose family owns a motel at 933 S. Harbor, said that the improved roadway would be too close to his motel units and that passing cars could create a hazard.
City staff members said they will continue to seek settlements with property owners to avoid going to court.
Construction on the project is set to begin in early January and be completed by May.
