Go for the glam with Marc Deco, Art Deco-inspired picture frames by Mark Hirschman of Laguna Beach.

Hirschman, who developed a passion for Art Deco when he was commissioned to build architectural furnishings for Barbra Streisand’s home in Malibu, came up with his idea to reproduce frame designs after meeting with Chicago collector Steve Starr.

Starr has more than 650 original Art Deco frames in his collection. Hirschman worked out an agreement with Starr to reproduce 20 of the designs. All of the designs are silk-screened on glass, which is held to a wood backing by decorative metal corners or rosette screws.

Each frame ($60-$80) comes in several color combinations and will be stamped for authenticity.

The frames are available at Areo in Laguna Beach, Elements in Irvine and through the Exposure catalog.

Silver Wares

Calvin Klein continues to show his metal, this time with a platinum pattern of fine china, new this season to his home collection.

Designed as an alternative to the traditional “banded china,” the pattern includes a white flat-profile plate edged with matte platinum. Completing the spare, sophisticated look is silverplate flatware ($105 for five-piece setting) and cone cut stemware ($20-$27.50 per piece).

The china is available individually ($52 dinner plate, $28 salad plate, $48 soup bowl, $52 cup and saucer) or as a five-piece place setting ($180).

For an interesting mix of modern colors and textures, Klein has added a silverplate and bronze bowl ($270) and woven metal mesh place mats ($200) and napkin rings ($35 for flat, $80 for wide) to the collection.

For Security

Protect yourself and your property with Solar Wide’s ProTector Mini, a stand-alone alarm that uses an infrared motion detector to detect intruders. The alarm emits a piercing signal to frighten away strangers.

The ProTector Mini has a locking device for maximum security, with a plug-in key for arming and disarming. No installation is required; just turn it on, and it’s ready. A wall-mount kit is included. The alarm has a battery with a life of one year and features a low-battery indicator light.

The alarm (about $30) has two settings: a chime function--used for signaling entering guests, or as a warning signal near a pool, stove or other hazardous area--and an alarm mode. The detection range is 30 feet, with a sensor angle of 32 degrees vertically and 80 degrees horizontally.
