Barry, For One, Is Pumped for Season

Share

Brent Barry, who as a spindly rookie nicknamed himself “Air Bones,” reported for his second Clipper camp Friday 13 pounds heavier at 196.

Barry, 6 feet 6, is now up to “slender,” but he’s not giving up his old schtick.

“I feel good,” said Barry, “but I don’t want people who read the paper to think I’ve turned into some sort of Arnold Schwarzenegger-type he-man. I mean, that’s not the case.”

Barry lifted weights all summer, an hour-and-a-half per session, five days a week, and now has a real chest and biceps he can flex. Just like the other guys.

All Bill Fitch camps are about conditioning. The Clipper coach says he hopes to run more this season, and that starts with being in shape.

“We haven’t had what you’d call great running teams here,” he said. “First year I was here, we played without a center. Bo [Outlaw] and [Tony] Massenburg were our centers. It’s tough to run just on made baskets. . . . We’ve got the shooters now.”

This year they’re still wondering who their center will be. As expected, unsigned Brian Williams was a no-show. Clipper officials report continued silence from his agent, Fred Slaughter.

Stanley Roberts flew to South Carolina for the funeral of an uncle and missed the Friday morning session. He’s expected back today.
