Fires Spread Near Big Sur and Vacaville
Backfires were set south of Big Sur on Thursday in an effort to slow a fast-moving wildfire that continued to burn out of control in rugged wilderness Thursday.
The fire started Monday night beside California 1 at Lucia, about 20 miles south of Big Sur. The blaze, which may be arson, spread rapidly inland, destroying a house, a vehicle and several outbuildings.
By nightfall Thursday, more than 1,750 acres had been blackened. Only about 10% of the fire was contained.
About 140 miles to the north, a brush fire continued to advance northwest of Vacaville after scorching more than 500 acres. The fire was only about 20% contained.
