A 25-year-old man was detained by Ventura police officers Friday night after he allegedly brandished an imitation handgun at family members in Oxnard, authorities said.

Juan Alcantar was taken into custody at his house in the 100 block of Berkeley Avenue about 9:30 p.m., according to Ventura Police Lt. Dave Inglis.

Alcantar was wanted by Oxnard police, who said that about 9 p.m. he displayed a 9-milimeter handgun to family members on Claremont Street in Oxnard, authorities said. He left the residence with a small child of whom he has legal custody, authorities said.

Police in Ventura were notified of the incident and asked by Oxnard officers to detain the suspect if he showed up at his house. About 9:20 p.m., Alcantar pulled up in his Toyota and was taken into custody.

The gun ended up being a fake, and Alcantar was probably going to be given a misdemeanor citation for brandishing a replica handgun, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Bryan MacDonald.

The investigation is continuing.
