A brush fire caused by a distress flare that blackened more than 200 acres near Lake Piru was put out early Friday morning, fire officials said.

Authorities say the fire in the Los Padres National Forest northwest of the lake was started at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, when hikers shot off a flare after one of them suffered a diabetic reaction. A total of 225 acres of sage and chaparral were burned.

The lake was not affected by the fire.

Los Padres National Forest spokeswoman Joanna Guttman said crews would stay on the scene of the fire until 6 a.m. today to ensure there isn’t a flare-up. The fire burned in steep and rocky terrain, and the U.S. Forest Service was assisted in battling the blaze by the Ventura County Fire Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
