Corona del Mar’s Lachman Moves to Second Round With Victory
Corona del Mar’s Dan Lachman advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in men’s singles by defeating Sweden’s Niclas Larsson 6-2, 6-4, Monday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
In women’s singles, top-seeded Monique Kalkman of the Netherlands, silver medalist at the Atlanta Paralympics, defeated Nancy Olson of Daytona Beach, Fla., 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Also in singles, Maaike Smit of the Netherlands picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Australia’s Randa Hinson.
Today’s matches will feature defending champion David Hall of Costa Mesa and the Netherlands’ Ricky Molier, the Paralympics gold medalist in men’s singles. On the women’s side Mission Viejo’s Karin Korb will play seven-time U.S. Open winner Chantal Vandierendonck of Holland.
Admission is free until Friday and a weekend pass for the men’s and women’s finals is $5.
