The Look: As the weather cools, snowboarding-inspired styles will be big on the streets. The once-clunky boots have been streamlined to go the distance from the slopes to the clubs. And the silver parka, attempted by such disparate labels as Issey Miyake, Mossimo and Verso USA, is a standout in the lift line.

How to Do It Big:

For the fall season Japanese designer Issey Miyake did a sublime metallic jacket for snowboarders, skiers or for guys who just have to wear a “Miyake.” This style from his signature collection, made of a quilted lightweight cotton-poly and filled with down, is $2,145 at Maxfield, Los Angeles, and Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills. His tight, boot-cut pants (with stirrups for an extra-lean stretch) wouldn’t fly among boarders, who insist on bagginess for maximum maneuverability and view with contempt anything hinting of ski wear. But they might buy the bright orange mock turtleneck in wool or the boots. Unfortunately, neither is available in the United States.

Total: $2,145 (parka only)

How to Do It for Less:

A new California company, Verso USA, came up with this shiny jacket made of 1% aluminum and 99% polyester. It’s super-light and baggy--just the way stick-riders like ‘em--and sells for $350 at Politix and Fred Segal, both in Los Angeles. The skin-tight, boot-cut vinyl jeans are designed by a Los Angeles company called Lip Service. They’re $70 and available now at Red Balls of Fire in Los Angeles and Electric Chair in Huntington Beach. The orange polyester top is a Mossimo hockey jersey worn backward. We found it at Macy’s in the Beverly Center for $55. The Airwalk boots cost $26.99 at Ross Dress for Less.
