Opening Up on Canyon, Hart Rolls to 41-3 Win

Hart High’s offense rolled up 389 yards in a 41-3 thrashing of rival Canyon in a Foothill League opener Friday night at Canyon High.

The Indians held Canyon to 121 yards and eight first downs.

Hart’s Travis Carroll completed 17 of 21 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns as the Indians (4-2) scored on their first four possessions.

The Cowboys (2-4) trailed, 27-0, before scoring late in the first half on a 27-yard field goal by Jimmy Giordano.

Hart set the tempo on its first play from scrimmage when center Kevin Riske rambled 54 yards for a touchdown on a fumblerooski play.

Carroll threw touchdown passes of 30, seven and 39 yards before giving way to David Neill in the fourth quarter.

C.J. Bond caught four passes for 74 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown in the third quarter from Carroll.

Cody Joyce was held to 26 yards in three catches, but he scored on a 65-yard fumble return early in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Carroll’s other scoring passes covered 30 yards to Brian Pritchett and seven yards to Nate McAfee.

Hart’s other touchdown was on a one-yard run by Chris Wright.

With 7 minutes 41 seconds left in the first half, Canyon quarterback Rick Thomas collapsed after completing a five-yard pass to Brian Gelt. Preliminary reports from paramedics on the scene were that Thomas suffered a head injury and felt tingling in his lower extremities.

Thomas was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where his condition was kept private at the request of his family.

Thomas completed six of nine passes for 56 yards. His replacement, Kevin Hammer, completed three of seven passes for 19 yards.

Jeff McKinley of Canyon rushed for 76 yards in 16 carries.
