Odyle Wins to Stay Perfect on the Turf
Bouncing back from a disappointing effort in the Woodbine Million, Odyle won for the second time in as many tries on turf, capturing the $130,250 Volante Handicap Sunday in the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita.
Taking advantage of a dream trip behind pacesetters The Barking Shark and Matty G, the 2-1 second choice took the lead in the stretch and went on to beat 23-1 shot Lago by two lengths in 1:46 4/5 for the 1 1/8 miles.
Rainbow Blues, the 9-5 favorite, ran into trouble when trying to rally with the winner and wound up about three lengths back in third.
“He’s always been a talented horse, but I think he’s found his best game now in being on the grass,” said Chris McCarron, who rode Odyle for the first time Sunday.
Odyle is trained by Paco Gonzalez.
