A 32-year-old man died after leaping from the 14th floor of the Hyatt Regency Irvine on Thursday, and authorities have ruled the death a suicide.

Two people saw the man jump about 4:30 p.m. as they were preparing for an Orange County Business Council gathering in the hotel’s lower pool courtyard, hotel officials and guests said.

“They were about 40 feet away,” General Manager Rod T. Schinnerer said. “We talked to them before they left and asked if they needed counseling or anything, and they said no.”

The man, a San Juan Capistrano resident who apparently was not a registered guest of the hotel, had jumped from a fire landing between two towers and landed “alongside the building” near a valet parking lot in the 17900 block of Jamboree Road, authorities said.

Coroner’s authorities said there was no indication that the man had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The man’s parents filed a missing persons report about 3 p.m. Thursday. Investigators do not know the motive for his jump.
