SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Charlie Williams rushed 24 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead El Modena to a 37-22 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a Century League game Friday at El Modena High.

Williams scored both of his touchdowns in the first half as the Vanguards (2-5, 1-1) raced to a 30-14 halftime lead.

El Modena’s defense played well against the Falcons (0-7, 0-2), intercepting two passes and sacking Santa Ana Valley quarterback Pablo Hermosa four times. One sack resulted in a safety.

El Modena converted a Falcon turnover into a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes 12 seconds left in the first quarter when Williams went around left end for a 15-yard score.

Santa Ana Valley got as close as it would all night on its next possession when Brian Fort scored on a 50-yard double reverse with 8:15 left in the first quarter.

The Vanguards made it 14-7 with 3:27 left in the quarter when Mike Walters scored on 24-yard run. Then three mistakes by the Falcons’ offense enabled El Modena to build its big halftime lead.

Cesar Vasquez picked off a Hermosa pass and returned it 25 yards to make it 21-7 late in the first quarter. After an El Modena interception by Ryan Jackson, Williams went around the left side for a seven-yard score and a 28-7 lead.

An El Modena fumble inside its 40 set up a 10-yard scoring run by Hermosa to cut the lead to 28-14. But just before halftime, Mike Walters sacked Hermosa in the end zone for a 30-14 lead.

The Vanguards made it 37-14 early in the third on a 54-yard pass play from Matt Garcia to Charlie Walters.
