Shooting Range Suicides

Interviews with range owners, medical examiners and law enforcement officials, as well as news archive searches, found these suicides at gun ranges since February 1995:

* Sept. 17: Arthur Kampf, 62, shoots himself with a rented .38-caliber revolver at the Bullseye gun range in San Rafael, Calif.

* Sept. 14: A 40-year-old San Francisco man shoots himself with a rented .45-caliber pistol at Jackson Arms gun range in South San Francisco. Officials said he had chronic back pain from an auto accident and could no longer work as a general contractor.

* Sept. 4: A 37-year-old paraplegic in a wheelchair shoots himself with a rented 9mm pistol at the Jackson Arms range. He was paralyzed while in the military in the late 1970s.

* June 1996: A 52-year-old woman rents a .357-caliber revolver and shoots herself at a Tulsa, Okla., gun range. Officials said she was unemployed, had cancer and had no local family.

* April 1996: A 24-year-old man shoots himself in the chest with a rented .38-caliber weapon at a gun range in Milpitas, Calif.

* March 1996: A 45-year-old man shoots himself under the chin with a rented 9mm handgun at a gun range in Milpitas. Family members said he had marital and financial problems, as well as deteriorating health, including diabetes.

* March 1996: A 49-year-old man, said to be a transient, shoots himself in the mouth using a rented .40-caliber Glock handgun at a shooting range in Cotati, Calif.

* February 1996: A British man and woman, both 22, shoot themselves after renting .38-caliber and .357-caliber guns at a shooting range in Mesa, Ariz., in an apparent suicide pact.

* July 1995: A 47-year-old man shoots himself in the head with a rented .38-caliber revolver at a shooting range in Thousand Oaks. He bought three boxes of bullets, containing 150 rounds, shot 149 and used the last one to kill himself.

* June 1995: A 27-year-old woman from Cascade Park, Wash., shoots herself in the head with a rented 9mm pistol at a range in Portland, Ore. Family said the woman, who worked as an exotic dancer, had experienced episodes of depression.

* February 1995: Klay Monday, 21, rents a 9mm pistol at Alco Pistol Range in Stockton, shoots and kills a 34-year-old man, then shoots himself. Authorities say Monday suffered from mental illness, including paranoia, and did not know the man he shot.
