A Compton man was killed and six others were injured early Saturday when a car struck his stalled vehicle, which was on the side of the San Diego Freeway.

“The second car failed to see the first car stopped in the road,” said a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman, and hit it from behind.

Jose Ontiveros, 32, of Compton died at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.

The accident happened about 7:45 a.m. Saturday when the driver of a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner traveling about 65 mph rammed into the stalled Toyota Corona on the southbound San Diego Freeway just north of Irvine Center Drive.

Three other people in the Toyota Corona with Ontiveros suffered serious injuries, according to the spokeswoman. One person in the Toyota 4-Runner was seriously hurt, she said, while two others in the car suffered minor injuries.

The accident snarled traffic for more than two hours, the CHP spokeswoman said. No citations were issued in the accident, which is still under investigation, she said.
