Halloween Revelers to Get Fliers on Violence

Share

Children making the rounds in the Valley this Halloween may receive something more than a bag full of candy. Some will receive fliers promoting domestic violence prevention.

Along with candy, volunteers around the Valley will give trick or treaters fliers detailing facts on domestic violence and the resources available to those affected by it.

The outreach effort is sponsored by the Van Nuys office of the Los Angeles Commission on Assault Against Women.

“Halloween is a time to see people face-to-face who you might not normally see in the community,” said Leah Aldridge, the commission’s director of youth violence prevention. “It’s also important to reach people when they’re young.”

The commission is also working with students at Monroe High School in North Hills. Students will distribute fliers Thursday and talk with peers about domestic violence. A similar program is planned at First United Methodist Church of Reseda. From 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, costumed children stopping by the church will find candy and discussion.

“We’re trying to create more cohesive neighborhoods and encourage people to get involved,” Aldridge said.
