March to Celebrate Pride in Community

Share

The Sunland-Tujunga Coordinating Council will hold the third annual March and Rally for a Clean and Safe Community on Saturday.

A one-mile march--beginning at 10 a.m. at Verdugo Hills YMCA and ending at Little Landers Park--will be followed by a rally. Residents are encouraged to display signs bearing “positive messages” reflecting their desire to improve the community, said organizer Joanne Wright, a member of the council.

The rally is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

“The march and rally are a fun time for the community to get together and show that there is unity here among the people who want to keep this area clean and safe,” Wright said.

Los Angeles Police Department Foothill Division Capt. Ron Bergman and Steve Parker, an aide to Mayor Richard Riordan, will be the featured speakers at the rally.

Representatives from a number of community groups, including Neighborhood Watch, Citizen’s Patrol, DARE, School Parent Centers, Bridge Focus and the Coordinating Council will staff tables, offering information about their services and activities, Wright said.

Additional activities include live music and a puppet show performed by students from Apperson Street Elementary School. A collection of classic cars also will be on display on a closed-off portion of Valmont Street adjacent to the park.

The march will begin in the parking lot of Verdugo Hills YMCA, 6840 Foothill Blvd., in Tujunga.
