Crime Drops 90% Since Filing of Gang Injunction

Since filing a gang injunction six months ago, crime in north Redondo Beach has been reduced by almost 90% and graffiti have decreased by 71%, according to a police report issued Friday.

The report also said that 24 of the 28 gang members served with a temporary restraining order have been arrested on various violations of the law.

When the city was granted a preliminary injunction in June it had three goals, according to City Prosecutor Mike Webb:

* To keep a pending war between the Northside Redondo 13 gang and rival Lawndale 13 from escalating;

* To recapture Perry Park so it could be used safely by the public rather than as a gang headquarters;

* To reduce the crime in north Redondo Beach, the area most affected by gang crime.

Webb said the city has reached all its goals and residents have reported that their neighborhood is safe again.

“It’s going really well,” Webb said.

“It’s exceeded all that we ever hoped for.”

Webb said the preliminary injunction, granted in June, is good for three years.

The city will have go back to court at that point to seek a permanent injunction.
