Fire at ICN Causes $300,000 in Damage

A fire that started on the roof of ICN Pharmaceutical Inc. caused damage estimated at $300,000, but no injuries, authorities said Saturday.

The blaze did not threaten hazardous chemicals stored a “significant” distance away in the back of the plant, said Capt. Scott Brown, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

About 10 p.m. Friday, an automated fire alarm summoned firefighters to the 2700 block of Campus Drive, where they saw flames shooting from the roof, Brown said. About 50 firefighters battled for nearly an hour to control the fire, which had worked its way into some attic space.

“It made it more difficult to access the fire,” Brown said.

No firefighters were injured and there were no employees inside the plant at the time of the fire, Brown said. An automated sprinkler system was activated.

Investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the blaze, which started from the roof and “worked its way inside.”

“They had just completed roofing that structure . . . and something in the process sparked the fire,” Brown said.
