There’s More Hole Than Net at Pond

Share

Somebody needs to check the nets more closely at the Pond.

Joe Sakic’s goal, which initially went undetected Sunday because the puck went through the back of the net, wasn’t the first one like that in Anaheim.

It has happened twice before--a total of three times in little more than three seasons.

The New Jersey Devils forfeited a goal last season during a 6-1 loss to the Ducks Nov. 5, 1995, because of a hole in the Duck net. The Devils’ Steve Thomas took a shot that went through the net undetected. The referee couldn’t be notified by the video goal judge until the next stoppage of play, which came when Ken Daneyko scored more than a minute later. Thomas’ shot was ruled a goal, and the clock was turned back, erasing Daneyko’s goal.

The Ducks benefited the other time, when Bobby Dollas was credited with a goal during a 4-2 loss to St. Louis March 20, 1995, after a video review showed the puck went through a hole in the knotted twine.

Coach Ron Wilson has been playing Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne with Kevin Todd instead of Jari Kurri. Kurri played with Garry Valk and Roman Oksiuta. . . . An NHL review Oksiuta’s retaliatory kick at San Jose’s Doug Bodger after being cross checked resulted in no supplementary discipline. Oksiuta was given a match penalty in the incident.
