The City Council’s meeting Tuesday will include a historic moment: installation of a plaque in City Hall commemorating Darrell Essex’s 34 years of service as Cypress city manager.

Essex, who retired June 28, served longer than any other city manager in Orange County history. League of California Cities officials said his service record for a single city also may be a state record.

The bronze plaque, 16 inches by 28 inches, will be dedicated in the west wing of City Hall right after the start of the 7 p.m. meeting.

City officials noted that during Essex’s tenure, Cypress grew from an agricultural area with 4,000 residents to a modern city that now has a population of more than 46,000.
