Bubb Says Northridge to Add 14 Scholarships Next Year

Share

Cal State Northridge’s athletic budget for the 1997-98 school year will include an increase of 14 scholarships, including five football scholarships, Athletic Director Paul Bubb said Wednesday.

Bubb said he hoped to raise the total number of football scholarships from 40 to close to 50, but revenue projections and Bubb’s desire to add a women’s scholarship for every men’s scholarship made that goal unreachable.

The NCAA maximum of scholarships for Division I-AA football is 63, a level Northridge has promised the Big Sky Conference to approach by 1998.

Northridge will add one scholarship for the new men’s tennis team and one-half scholarship each between golf and volleyball.

On the women’s side, the swim team will gain three scholarships and the golf, soccer, softball and tennis teams each will gain one.

Bubb said all teams are free to grant more scholarships than those allotted by the athletic department if the team can cover the costs through its own fund-raising.

Dig it: Northridge setter Heather Hofmans was named Big Sky Conference player of the week in women’s volleyball. Against Eastern Washington last Thursday, Hofmans had 27 digs and seven kills, both career highs.
