Summery Weather Is Expected to Last Through the Weekend
The calendar says it’s November, but you wouldn’t know it by the near-record temperatures Friday and the Southland forecast for the weekend.
In Santa Ana on Friday, the mercury reached 93 degrees, four degrees shy of the record set in 1956. In Anaheim it was 89 and in Lake Forest it was 87. On average, the temperatures were 10 to 15 degrees above normal, said Curtis Brack, meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which tracks forecasts for The Times.
The cool breezes of a week ago have given way to warm Santa Ana winds this week, resulting in summer-like weather that is predicted to last through the weekend. The unseasonable warmth is caused by a strong ridge of high pressure combined with an offshore flow, Brack said.
“There’s a very huge storm developing over the eastern half of the nation, plus there’s a storm moving southward out of the Gulf of Alaska, and in between those two storms” is the high pressure, he said.
The offshore flow pushes the marine layer outward, Brack added. “So, you’re not having any cooling effect from any fog, and you’re having lots and lots of sunshine.”
The trend is likely to continue until Sunday evening, when the marine layer is expected to roll in.
Highs for the weekend are expected to hover around 90 degrees inland and in the 70s and low 80s along the coast.
