Groups Plan Events to Honor War Veterans

Across Ventura County, veterans groups and city officials are planning Veterans Day commemorations on Monday.

* A tribute to Vietnam War veterans will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, 40 Presidential Drive, in Simi Valley, starting at 10:30 a.m. Retired Adm. Jeremiah A. Denton, a former prisoner of war, will be guest speaker. Thousand Oaks High School’s brass quintet will perform, and all veterans will receive free admission to the museum.

* In Oxnard, a veterans ceremony dedicated to youth involvement will be held in Plaza Park, at C and 5th streets, starting at 10 a.m. Mayor Manuel Lopez will speak at the ceremony for veterans groups from across Ventura County. A flyover by vintage warplanes of the Confederate Air Force is also planned.

* In Simi Valley, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10049 will hold a flag-raising ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Rancho Tapo Community Park, at the corner of Avenida Simi and Lemon Drive, at 10 a.m. State Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley), Supervisor Judy Mikels and other public officials are expected to speak during the ceremony, which will be attended by representatives of local Elks and Moose lodges and the Knights of Columbus.

* The Military Order of the World Wars in Thousand Oaks will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Conejo Creek Park on Janss Road at 10 a.m. Retired Lt. Gen. Herbert Temple will speak, and the Condor Squadron, based in Van Nuys, will fly over the area.

* American Legion Post 741 of Camarillo will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Constitution Park, at the corner of Paseo Camarillo and Carmen Drive, at 11 a.m. Retired Maj. Gen. Raymond B. Stewart will speak at the ceremony in recognition of community-based veterans organizations.

* American Legion Post 502 of Moorpark will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Grove in Poindexter Park, 500 Poindexter Ave., starting at 10 a.m.

* In Ojai, American Legion Post 482 will set up flags along three blocks of Ojai Avenue and the driveway to Nordhoff Cemetery. Flags will also be posted at the World War I memorial to fallen soldiers in Libbey Park.

* In Ventura, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1679 will present an Avenue of Flags at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, 5400 Valentine Road. The memorial will remain at the cemetery for one week.
