Leschyshyn Gets Traded, Then Scores Winning Goal

In a storybook finish to a week in which he has been on three different teams, Curtis Leschyshyn scored the winning goal for the Hartford Whalers.

Leschyshyn scored with 4.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Whalers a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres Saturday at Hartford, Conn.

Hours before the game, Leschyshyn was traded from the Washington Capitals for Andrei Nikolishin.

“It’s been such a roller-coaster week that I’ve gone through,” said Leschyshyn, who was dealt to the Capitals last week from the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. “I’ve gone through every emotion in the book. It’s been tough.”

Florida 4, Pittsburgh 2--Goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick blocked Jaromir Jagr’s penalty shot with 4:53 remaining as the Panthers held on for a victory at Miami.

The Penguins, who came back from a 3-0 deficit with goals by Petr Klima and Petr Nedved, were playing without scoring leader Mario Lemieux, who missed his first game of the season with a stiff lower back.

Colorado 5, Montreal 2--Scott Young got his third career hat trick and Patrick Roy beat his former team for the second time since being traded as the streaking Avalanche beat the Canadiens at Denver.

Chicago 4, Philadelphia 1--Gary Suter and Tony Amonte each had a goal and an assist and Jeff Hackett made 33 saves for the Blackhawks at Philadelphia.

Washington 3, N.Y. Rangers 2--Todd Krygier scored the game-winning goal with 58 seconds left and Jim Carey stopped 23 shots to earn his fifth consecutive win in the Capitals victory at Landover, Md.

Toronto 7, Edmonton 3--Wendel Clark had his second career four-goal game and the Maple Leafs took advantage of a five-goal second period to win at Toronto.

New Jersey 4, N.Y. Islanders 0--After missing five games with a groin injury, Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist in his return to the lineup in the Devils’ win at East Rutherford, N.J.

Boston 4, Ottawa 3--Adam Oates and Jean-Yves Roy scored third-period goals at Kanata, Ontario, as the Bruins ended a five-game losing streak.

St. Louis 3, Calgary 2--Brett Hull’s power-play goal with 3:51 left in the third period gave the Blues a victory at Calgary as the Flames lost their fourth consecutive game.
