Firefighter Hurt in $100,000 Canoga Park Apartment Fire
A firefighter suffered minor injuries in a late-night blaze that damaged a carport and an apartment building.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said the fire began about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8200 block of Owensmouth Avenue when a carport housing seven cars caught fire.
About 30 firefighters fought the blaze, which also caused extensive damage to one apartment downstairs and one upstairs. Humphrey said department officials estimate the fire caused close to $100,000 worth of damage to the carport and apartments.
They arranged for the Red Cross to provide temporary shelter for residents who were displaced, he said.
The unidentified firefighter was injured when a shard of glass flew into his right eye. He was taken to Columbia West Hills Medical Center in West Hills and later released. He was relieved of fire duty until his eye can be further checked by a specialist.
Humphrey said the fire was ruled as incendiary, meaning that all accidental causes have been ruled out. An investigation will determine other possible causes.
