City to Settle Lawsuits Over ’93 Landslide for $4.5 Million

The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to spend nearly $4.5 million to settle a series of lawsuits over a 1993 landslide that still threatens homes in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The landslide took place after the March 1993 rains in the hillside above North Beverly Drive, west of the Lower Franklin Reservoir. Although the slide did not severely damage the homes, the residents were forced to evacuate. Since then, the city has made temporary improvements--such as covering the hill with a plastic tarp during the rains--to keep the hill stable.

But the homeowners on North Beverly Drive and the development company that owns the hillside sued the city of Los Angeles, charging that the city weakened the hillside by building a road above North Beverly Drive in the 1930s.
