State Panel OKs $48.5 Million to Keep Trolley Line on Track

The California Transportation Commission approved $48.5 million Thursday to help keep the downtown Los Angeles-to-Pasadena trolley line on schedule, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said.

“This money allows us to finish work that has already begun,” said MTA Board Chairman Larry Zarian. “The actual date for completion of the Pasadena Blue Line still has to be determined by the board, but this is an important step toward keeping the project on schedule and within budget.”

The state funds will go toward final design work and construction of the Pasadena Transportation Center, which will include bus bays, parking and bicycle facilities at the Del Mar station.

The MTA still faces a key hearing in December, when transit officials must convince the state that they have spending under control in order to receive an additional $50 million for the Pasadena line. Transit officials have said that they also need to find other sources of money in order to complete the Pasadena line by 2001.

Projected cost for the Pasadena line is $867 million. To date, $174.4 million has been spent.
