Graffiti Vandal ‘Chaka’ Jailed Again
The graffiti vandal who gained notoriety in 1990 for spray-painting his nickname, “Chaka,” on thousands of public places from Orange County to San Francisco was sentenced to 15 months in jail after pleading guilty to a new graffiti incident.
Daniel Ramos, 24, was sentenced Wednesday by Los Angeles Municipal Judge Jacob Adajian for one count of vandalism and for violating his parole on previous convictions for shoplifting and possession of a cocaine pipe.
On Oct. 4, police officers spotted Ramos spray-painting the wall of the federal Social Services Administration offices in Boyle Heights. Ramos told arresting officers that he was paid $50 by a Boyle Heights street gang to memorialize one of the gang’s recently slain members by painting “Rest in Peace, in Loving Memory.”
After his 1990 arrest for a statewide graffiti spree, Ramos was charged with $500,000 worth of property damage and sentenced to one year in jail and 1,560 hours cleaning graffiti.
