A 27-year-old Fountain Valley man was shot and killed early Friday during a fight outside a Stanton billiards hall, sheriff’s officials said.

Jean Pierre Nguyen was leaving the Side Pocket, in the 8000 block of Lampson Avenue, about 12:30 a.m. with a friend when a confrontation erupted outside the front of the business, said Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson.

Nguyen and his friend were arguing with a group of three or four other men. The argument escalated into a fight, a shot rang out, and Nguyen staggered inside the business and collapsed, Wilkerson said.

He was taken to Columbia West Anaheim Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. A second victim--a 26-year-old man from Orange--was treated and released at the scene for head injuries incurred in the fight.

Sheriff’s officials are withholding his name because he is a witness in the case, Wilkerson said.

The motive for the fight is unclear, and Wilkerson said it does not appear that the confrontation began inside the business.

“We believe [the victim and his friend] were inside, but we don’t know that there was any kind of problem inside,” he said. “It looks like they were leaving when this happened.”

The suspects fled on foot.
