Garcia Rushes for 120 Yards as Western Shuts Out Magnolia

It was the little red thing Sergio Garcia was looking at.

Garcia raced 88 yards for a touchdown on the second play of Western’s first possession as the Pioneers beat Magnolia, 21-0, in an Orange League game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Said Garcia, a senior running back, “I cut back, saw an opening and saw the little red thing. I didn’t want to get tackled from behind or fumble.”

What’s the little red thing? The goal-line marker.

Magnolia had a difficult time keeping up with Garcia--and Western--the rest of the night.

After the Sentinels (4-6, 1-4) punted, Western scored on its next possession.

Western quarterback Jimmy Conway, who went out early in the fourth quarter because of a slight concussion, threw an incomplete pass on first down.

Trevell Jackson was dropped for a one-yard loss, but on third and 11, Conway passed 40 yards to Anthony Ortiz for the score.

Garcia led Western in rushing with 120 yards in 11 carries. He had 98 yards in five carries in the first half. Tremayne Robertson gained 95 yards in 15 carries.

Western (5-5, 3-2) put away the game with a 61-yard drive that started at the end of the third quarter. Conway had a key 16-yard run in the fourth quarter, but left after a head injury.

Garcia’s nine-yard touchdown run capped Western’s scoring.
