Hicks Sets Record With 18th Score

Share

Skip Hicks’ one-yard scoring run in the second quarter gave him 18 touchdowns this season, a UCLA record and one better than the former school mark, set by Gaston Green in 1986 and tied by J.J. Stokes in 1993.

Hicks scored with 6:51 to play in the second quarter after quarterback Cade McNown had noticed a weakness in the Arizona defensive formation and changed the play at the line of scrimmage.

Hicks finished with 48 yards in 21 carries, giving him 918 yards for the season, best of his career.

McNown completed 12 of 28 passes for 205 yards. He hit Danny Farmer on a 31-yard touchdown pass, McNown’s 11th of the season, but also threw his 15th interception.

He went past the 2,000-yard mark, with 2,068 yards.

Chris McAlister’s kickoff return set an Arizona record: 100 yards, only because NCAA records do not record steps taken in the end zone to begin the play.

Arizona has its own rivalry game ahead, against fourth-ranked Arizona State, also on Saturday.

“[Arizona] can play with ASU,” UCLA Coach Bob Toledo said. “This was a different team than played Oregon.”

And unless UCLA has a different team than played Saturday against the Wildcats, the Bruins’ five-game winning streak against USC is in jeopardy.

“We’ve got to regroup,” Toledo said. “We need to try to win the last one for the seniors.”

No passes were thrown at UCLA receiver Derek Ayers, who was shut out for the first time all season. . . . Jim McElroy caught passes of 46 and 32 yards from McNown, and Eric Scott caught two passes for 27 yards, becoming the eighth UCLA receiver with more than 100 yards this season. . . . The touchdown by Arizona freshman Leon Callen, a 15-yard run that followed a McNown fumble in the game’s waning minutes, was his first. He had 116 yards in 22 carries. . . . The Wildcats’ Kelvin Eafon scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. It was his only carry of the day.
