Job Information Center May Reopen
The city of Los Angeles may soon reopen a job information center in Van Nuys that was closed two years ago due to budget cuts.
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick recommended Tuesday that city personnel officials draft a report on the costs and staffing needed to reopen the center. For many years, the center at the Van Nuys Civic Center provided information on the 2,000 or so city jobs available and helped residents apply and test for Civil Service positions.
But the center was closed due to a budget shortfall. “While budget constraints still exist, the city should explore reopening the Valley job information center to give Valley residents improved access to city job openings,” Chick said in a formal motion to the council.
The city recently opened a similar job center in South Los Angeles on a pilot basis. The report on reopening the center is expected to come before the council’s personnel committee within 30 days.
