City Council members went to bat recently for sluggers in the San Juan Capistrano Little League, voting for a new baseball field at the city’s Sports Park.

Under the plan, the park’s existing softball diamond would be converted during Little League season, February through June, to a baseball field exclusively for senior and major league players 10 to 15 years old.

Some residents have opposed the new field, saying that it will have a negative effect on other local sports organizations.

According to the plan, groups such as the Capistrano Valley Bobby Sox, American Youth Soccer Organization and adult softball leagues will not be able to use the fields until after the Little League season. King said city officials will meet with those groups to resolve their concerns.

Little League officials requested the new field, saying that the ones they now use at San Juan Elementary School have deteriorated. With the new field, officials said, the league will have a city-maintained facility at a central site.

“It addresses a variety of community needs,” said Al King Jr., community services director.
