County May Give 2 Parks to Cities
Cerritos and La Mirada could soon inherit new land as Los Angeles County considers letting go of some of its regional parks.
Strained by recent budget crises, the county has already asked Cerritos to take over an 84-acre park within its borders. La Mirada is hoping that recent negotiations lead to a similar deal on 100 acres in the center of town.
The Cerritos City Council is expected to make a decision next month. Still to be resolved, City Manager Art Gallucci said, is how some park facilities--including a dilapidated pool and a gym--might be altered or demolished.
In La Mirada, a city with few other recreational areas, officials say the park would be a huge asset to local athletic leagues.
Officials from both cities note that even the best deal would mean hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in new maintenance costs.
